[Kate Delacoeur]

Kate had finally had enough of Conner's bullshit. She had tricked him with promises of frozen yogurt and had, indeed, driven to the proper parking lot. Instead of letting him out she locked the doors and was glad that the passenger side door was sort of broken.

"We have to talk. Actually talk about what's going on with you." She gripped the steering wheel tightly, unable to believe she actually had ti have this conversation. "I'm starting to feel like I don't know you. Not even a little."

She was supposed to be marrying this guy. And instead of acting like the person she thought he was, he was getting drunk and trying to make other people kill. It wasn't exactly flattering.

[Conner Comeau]

Conner should have known. Of course he should have known. His fiance was a tricksy lady. She was like...

Well, he didn't want to say a genie. That was silly. She wasn't blue, first off. Were genies actually blue? He had never met a genie. He had met a fairy once, which were kind of similar to genies. She wasn't blue, either. She was kind of green. But a pale green, not like a troll. Trolls were dark green. Sometimes they were gray or brown, but Conner always thought of them as dark green.

What was he thinking about, again?

Kate.

Right.

Focus.

He looked over at her. She was pretty. Of course she was pretty. Conner wouldn't date people who weren't pretty. He wondered if that made him shallow. He didn't really want to be thought of as shallow. Was it okay if only he knew he was shallow? Did that make it worse? If a genie turned him into water, how deep would it be? Why the fuck couldn't he stop thinking about genies? He hoped he wasn't psychic and was having premonitions that he was soon going to find a genie.

Kate was pretty. She had pretty long hair and good lips and a nice skin tone. Her eyes were brown which was kind of boring. Conner wondered what she would look like with green eyes. He imagined he would like it better. They'd stand out more. He liked it when people's eyes were really pretty because looking into their eyes was less creepy than staring at some other part of their body. He wondered if she would wear colored contacts if he asked. Not that he would.

"Maybe I don't know how to talk." He said, then turned away from her, leaning his head against the window. He was pretty sure this was going to end up with him crying and he didn't want her to see him crying.

"Then you'll have to learn." She was not going to let him get away with being sad and fussy. Not this time. He was good at changing the subject and she usually just gave up after a while, but not this time. "That's part of being married. Talking. If we can't talk I don't know how you expect this to work." Because Kate could talk about problems. He couldn't.

"I need you to tell me how to make it better. Because you're scaring me. I don't want to lose you, Conner." she feared it was inevitable. He would kill himself, or find someone else to do it. She didn't know what she would do then.

[Conner Comeau]

"You don't have to do anything, because there's nothing wrong." He shrugged. "Everything is fine. We love each other and we are going to have frozen yogurt and we go to work and we make plans and then we get married." He sighed. He wished it was winter. Then his breath would show up on the window and he could draw in it. But it was summer. It was hot and the sun was beating down on him through the glass and he knew he was going to get sunburned. Conner sunburned easily. He missed Montreal, sometimes. He missed speaking french. He missed hearing people speak french to him.

He ran his fingers against the glass anyway. He could pretend it was winter. He was good at pretending.

"Things have never been better."

[Kate Delacoeur]

"I suppose that's why you keep trying to end up dead? Bullshit, Conner. I'm not an idiot." At least - she was pretty sure she wasn't an idiot. Maybe she was. "Are you depressed? Do you want to see a doctor? I'll go with you, if that helps."

Kate would do just about anything to make it better. She would go to France. If he wanted to go to France, or Quebec, or wherever the hell else people spoke French, she would go. "Just say the word and I'll do what you need me to do."

[Conner Comeau]

"I need you to believe me when I tell you I'm fine." He wanted to ask her to leave. He wanted to pack up all of their stuff and just get on a plane. But he didn't say that. He didn't want to force her to go. If she didn't want to go....if she didn't really want to, who was he to make her leave? He knew how important heroing had been to her. He knew that she identified way more as a PE than he did. He couldn't rip her away from Metro City if she didn't want to go. She would just resent him for it. And he didn't want that. He would rather be the one who was unhappy. He was better at it.

[Kate Delacoeur]

"Then you need to be a better liar." Kate was a good liar. Being a hero made you that way. "I can you aren't okay. So why bother telling me you're fine when you aren't? You tried to get that nice girl to kill you. People who are fine don't do that. They don't."

She sighed, frustrated. "When I told you I'd leave I was serious. It's not first choice but I'm ready for a new adventure. So if you want to go, I will." It would mean leaving her parents behind, her brother behind. Her friends, her job. But life was not always what felt safe. "What's that they say? A ship's safe in the harbor but that's not what ships are for?"

[Conner Comeau]

"You don't want to go." He said and shrugged. "I'm not going to be that guy. I'm not going to tell you what to do. I'm not your dad. I'm nowhere near old enough." He smiled. Thinking about Kate's age always made him smile a little. Then he shook his head. This was serious.

"I am fine." He shrugged. "I am not...." He sighed. "Me being fine and you being just aren't the same."

[Kate Delacoeur]

"I'm not going to be okay if you kill yourself." Kate rested her head briefly on the steering wheel, frustrated. "I wouldn't tell you I wanted to move if I didn't want to. Don't treat me like a child."

She felt irritated and took a moment to calm down again. "Please let me help you. Here or anywhere else. I don't want to hear things about you from other people. You talk to other people, but not to me. You want me to be your wife but you don't talk to me." It was fucked up and it hurt. He couldn't trust her. Why couldn't he trust her?

[Conner Comeau]

"I do talk to you. We are talking right now." He gestured his hands. "This is talking."

[Kate Delacoeur]

"But you don't trust me." Kate hadn't really been going to say it, but there it was. "Do you?" She snorted. "Not that you would tell me if you didn't, of course."

[Conner Comeau]

"I trust you completely. What do you want me to do, Kate? Swear a blood oath? Should I consult with a shaman? I think I know a witch doctor if you want to learn the magic words to make me love you." He thumped his head against the window.

[Kate Delacoeur]

She sighed, defeated. "Forget it."

Kate pulled the keys from the ignition, undid her seatbelt, and got out of the car. She slammed the door behind her. "Câlisse!"

Was it a lot to ask that your fiance warned you that he was about to have a total break from reality and try to off himself? Or to at least be included in the group of people who were forewarned about his impending suicide? Kate was not an unreasonable woman. She wanted reasonable things!

[Conner Comeau]

Conner got out of the car but didn't move towards the restaurant. He leaned over the hood of the car.

"No." He looked at her. "What do you want me to do? What is it that you think will make this all better? What was your objective?" Goal. Normal people said goal, not objective.

"What was your goal?"

[Kate Delacoeur]

"I don't want to be afraid anymore. I don't want to be scared that I'm going to wake up and you'll be dead." Kate turned away, her back to him. "That's my goal. To have something I can fix. That's what people like me-" She meant heroes, but didn't say it. "Do. We want things to be fixed and okay because I don't really know what to do if they aren't okay."

[Conner Comeau]

"You can't fix people, Kate." He frowned. "We're not broken."

[Kate Delacoeur]

"I'll feel that way if something happens to you." She was quiet a moment. "I want to be there for you. I want to know what you're feeling and why you're feeling it. Is that stupid? Maybe it's stupid. I could be couyon."

[Conner Comeau]

"I'm feeling like I love you. Because you're great. That's what I'm feeling Kate." Too great for him. But that wasn't what she needed to hear.

[Kate Delacoeur]

Bastard. She turned to smile him. "You know you're making it very hard to be upset with you." Kate tried to look cross, but failed. "I love you too. It's why I don't want to lose you."

[Conner Comeau]

"I know." He made a lopsided face. "Look, I'm..." He sighed. "I could make you forget about this but I don't want to do that. I am tired of doing that. Let's just talk. Ask me what else you want so we don't have to do this again."
